Boldt Castle: Love, Loss, and Architectural Grandeur
Boldt Castle was a real treat. On our Two Nations Tour , we stopped off here for about 90 minutes. I wish we had longer to explore the history. There is an app that you can use for an audio tour and enjoy some of the history of Heart Island and the castle. The castle has a very sad story.
Beginning in 1900, the proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria hotels, George Boldt , began building this castle for his wife Louise. The family spent summers on nearby Wellsley Island (map )at their summer home and George purchased nearby Heart Island to build Louise a beautiful rhineland style castle. No expense was to be spared. A project of this magnitude would take many years, especially with the winters in New York. Tragedy struck in 1904 with the death of Louise. George halted construction immediately and never returned to Heart Island. In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority purchased the home and began to renovate it to be a tourist attraction. They have done an incredible job showcasing life in the 1900s and bringing thousands of visitors a year to Heart Island and the Thousand Islands area.
What struck me most about the castle is the attention to detail. In some of the build, you can see the inlay of a B surrounded by a heart - a clear representation of the love George had for Louise but also representing the Boldts on Heart Island. From the grandeur of the main castle to any number of the additional buildings, these details were strewn all throughout the build. We had a great time and will look forward to a return trip!
