Exploring Dover Delaware
We spent this Friday with Kate’s aunt and uncle, exploring Dover. We had a few people ask us about all of us being in RED, so we got to share the story with them.
We had a great time seeing the Dover Green , the Old State House, and the John Dickinson Plantation and learning about what makes Delaware special in the founding of our great nation!
We spent part of the afternoon at the Dickinson plantation learning about life in the colonial period. John Dickinson is known as “the Penman of the American Revolution”, having penned or contributed to several notable documents written during the American Revolution.
Also while at the Dickinson plantation, we were told of a famous midnight horse ride made on July 1, 1776, by Caesar Rodney, a neighbor of Dickinson’s. One of three Delaware delegates serving in the Continental Congress, Rodney was in Dover while the vote for independence from Britain was being deliberated in Philadelphia. He heard that the vote from Delaware was tied, so Rodney climbed onto a horse and raced more than 70 miles through a thunderstorm to reach Philadelphia, where he cast the deciding vote in favor of our nation’s independence.
We had a wonderful day with our family and learned so much about Delaware’s contributions to our great nation!
