Exploring New Bedford, MA
During our time in Plymouth we made our way to New Bedford, MA . New Bedford is home to the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park . Not all of human history is happy or good. In fact, this park, while it does highlight some good from the area, the main focus is on the commercial whaling industry that was heavily operated from the port here.
The exhibits in this park force you to confront one of mankind’s most predatory traits: our willingness to profit from the exploitation of wildlife and driving entire species to the brink of extinction. Yet, you also leave with a sense of hope, knowing that we ultimately managed to halt the slaughter of the whales. Having grown from that experience, humanity instituted laws to protect animals from such destruction in the future.
