Exploring Old Fort Niagara
Do you like history? Seeing history in action is one of our favorite things! Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NY is a really neat preservation of the history of the fort. Originally built by the French to protect their stake in the new world, Fort Niagara was built in 1678 and abandoned a few years later until 1726 when it was put into use again by the French and expanded over the next few decades.
In 1759 during the French and Indian War , the British launched a 19 day siege in which they dug a trench to take the fort by force. The British effectively remained in control of the fort until the early 1800’s, even after losing the war of American Independence.
Today, the fort is operated by a not for profit organization committed to preserving its history. They are supported by donations, tours, and gift shop purchases. It was a really neat stop while we were in Niagara!
