Exploring Plymouth, MA
We explored Plymouth seeing several sites. Most notably, we saw Plymouth Harbor and THE actual Plymouth Rock . While Plymouth Rock is famous as “the site where the Pilgrims landed”; did you know that there is no actual written historical record of that being the case? In fact, we now know that the pilgrims on the Mayflower first came ashore in the new world in Provincetown on Cape Cod and after a month of exploration moved the ship to Plymouth in search for better land to farm.
At the harbor there is much public artwork. Diane and I climbed the hill to see the status of Massasoit (this was actually his title - his name was Ousamequin (oh-sa-me-quin). Massasoit means “Great Sachem”. He was the leader of the Wampanoag people who allied with the Pilgrims.
We also stopped at the statue of William Bradford , the long-time governor of the colony and also Steve and Richard’s ancestor linking them to the Mayflower. We remarked at how small his statue made him look - maybe 5 feet in height. Massasoit’s, on the other hand, made the man look almost 8 feet tall.
