Free New York State Museum in Albany
We visited the New York State Museum in Albany (map ) - it is 100% FREE. This museum is incredibly well done and we saw only 25% of the exhibits in the 2 hours we visited.
The museum offers an incredible journey through the state’s past, from Indigenous cultures and natural history to New York’s role in major moments of American history.
One of the most powerful parts of the visit was the 9/11 exhibit, which preserves artifacts and personal stories from the September 11, 2001 attacks and their aftermath. We have been to several museums and monuments on our travels which remind us of the tragedies of this fateful day, but seeing these objects in person brings an important and deeply emotional chapter of recent history into focus.
The museum’s New York City exhibits were equally fascinating, offering a look at the city’s growth, changing landscape, and the people and events that helped shape one of the world’s most influential cities.
We highly recommend a visit to this museum if you plan to visit Albany, NY.
