Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse
Michigan is surrounded by great lakes sharing borders with 4 out of 5. There are approximately 130 lighthouses that cover various points along Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Huron on the shores of Michigan. While in Munising, we visited the Grand Island East Channel lighthouse . This beautiful and weathered looking lighthouse has been featured on numerous TV shows and is photographed by thousands of visitors annually.
Originally built in 1868 along with range lights on the eastern side of Munising Bay, the lighthouse only operated until 1913. It is now privately owned, but has been restored by local land owners and hundreds of volunteers. The only ways to visit the lighthouse are by boat and via the adjacent beach. There is no public access to the grounds.
