Like history? Then visit Ford Michilimackinac
If you like history one item to put on your list for your Mackinac trip is the Colonial Michilimackinac . It’s a fort that was originally built in 1715 by the French and taken over by the British in 1761 after the French’s defeat in the French and Indian War.
A few years later, the wooden fort was deemed to be a hazard (due to possible fire), and a new limestone fort was built on Mackinac Island. Once the major parts of life were moved to the new fort, the Commandant ordered Michilimackinac to be burned.
The Fort is now one of the longest running excavations , having an annual excavation team dig each summer since 1959.
