National Monument to the Forefathers
Just outside of downtown Plymouth, an 81 foot tall memorial to the pilgrims has been erected- the National Monument to the Forefathers . This monument is super impressive. You pull up and there is a large circular unpaved drive around it. The monument itself is elevated slightly on a hill in the center of the circular drive; the height from the gradual hill adding to the perceived size of it.
Around the base are granite carvings showing four scenes from the time of the Pilgrims plus two panels listing of the passengers on the Mayflower , one containing a quote from William Bradford , and a last one serving as a dedication.
At each cardinal direction sits a statue; these statues represent Morality, Law, Education, and Liberty. Finally, the top of the monument shows the greatest of all - Faith. Faith is shown with her hand lifted towards heaven and her left hand clutching a bible.
The statue honors the Pilgrim ideas that later became foundations of the United States of America. At first, we thought that Faith had a wreath on her head, but quickly discovered that it is actually a nest from an Osprey. If you get to Plymouth, we recommend taking a bit of time to enjoy this monument!
