Quirky Charm in Vermont's Tiny Capital City
We took a day to explore Montpelier (map )! Definitely the most intriguingly named capital city of any state. The city feels kind of like a quirky college town. Almost all of the businesses downtown are locally owned and operated, and there is not much in the way of “chains”.
We had lunch at Three Penny Taproom , which had really good food and service. They featured several Vermont foods and beverages on their menu. I (Kate) also liked that the bar had a place to hang your purse or jacket underneath because I hate hanging my purse on my chair.
After lunch, we walked around a bit to find public art and then took a quick tour of the Vermont State House . The current state house was finished in 1859 after the predecessor building was almost completely destroyed in a fire. It is the smallest state house, in the smallest capital city, in the second smallest state (by population) in the United States.
It was a fun day exploring Montpelier!
