We visited the Submarine Force Museum
Today we visited the Submarine Force Museum and took a historic boat tour of the Thames River in the nearby town of Groton, CT. The tour was about 75 minutes and took us a couple miles up and down the Thames River, showing us sites used in the defense of our country over the past 250 years. We learned about the ship and submarine building industry, which is still a major part of the economy here, and the crucial part this area played in the founding of our country.
The Submarine Force museum exhibits the USS Nautilus, which was the first nuclear powered ship and the first vessel to go to the North Pole. It was built down river in Groton, CT in the 1950s and served the US Navy from 1954 until its decommission in 1980.
