The Alpena Shipwreck Tour was really neat! We went to two different shipwrecks in Thunder Bay on the tour. The captain said that sometimes you get to see three, but the water was a bit cloudy, so it took a bit of time to maneuver the glass bottom boat to get us right on top of the wrecks. We had so much fun that we forgot to take photos of the wrecks through the bottom of the boat!

While in Alpena we rode a portion of the Alpena Bi-Path Trail on our e-bikes. The trail is approximately 14 miles with art and parks along the trail. We enjoyed a beautiful afternoon with our friends and took many stops to look at artwork and explore by foot along the way. One of our stops was at Island Park where we got off and walked around the island.

One of the things we always look for on the road (and it can be hit or miss, for sure!) is good Mexican food. Mango’s Tequila Bar in Alpena did not disappoint! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was fun and inviting.

For our last post on the Alpena Mural Trail we feature some of the artwork shown at the marina. These are painted by multiple artists and on both front and back of a panel series. The series depict many styles and variety of tones. We really love seeing this much artwork wherever we go!

The mural trail in Alpena has some really interesting art. There are so many that we can’t fit them all into one post (and it took us multiple days to find them all, even using the app)!

Alpena, Michigan sits on Thunder Bay in Lake Huron and is home to the National Marine Sanctuary and Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center . Because of the sporadic weather seen in this area, this area is infamous for its shipwrecks. Thunder Bay is nicknamed “Shipwreck Alley” due to its number of wrecks, many of which are in shallow waters and able to be seen from kayak or by snorkeling.

Our week in Alpena, Michigan was great, in spite of the rain the first couple days. The fairgrounds is a great place to stay - super quiet, and very close to town. It’s not perfect for our big rig (especially since our site flooded- the photo shows what it looked like after having a day to dry out!)
